Heterotopic ossification after hip arthroscopy
Heterotopic ossification (HO) after hip arthroscopy is the abnormal formation of mature lamellar bone within extra skeletal soft tissues. HO may lead to pain, impaired range of motion and possibly revision surgery. There has been a substantial amount of recent research on the pathophysiology, prophylaxis and treatment of HO associated with open and arthroscopic hip surgery. This article reviews...
متن کاملFamilial ectopic ossification.
We report a family with dominantly inherited ectopic ossification. It is characterised by childhood onset of multifocal subcutaneous ossifications (primary osteoma cutis), which are of trivial clinical significance. One family member had extensive ectopic ossification involving one limb. We speculate that this may reflect somatic mutation having caused conversion to homozygosity.
متن کاملEctopic ossification in tuberculous meningitis.
The syndrome of severe wasting, opisthotonus and paraplegia in flexion associated with considerable hydrocephalus is well known to those treating advanced cases of tuberculous meningitis. Once such a condition has developed, the outlook is generally poor. Many patients will die and the survivors will often be handicapped by a variety of physical and mental sequelae. The purpose of this paper is...
متن کاملExtraskeletal (Ectopic) Calcification and Ossification
A significant number and variety of disorders cause extraskeletal deposition of calcium and phosphate (Table 1). In some, mineral is precipitated as amorphous calcium phosphate or as crystals of hydroxyapatite; in others, osseous tissue is formed. The pathogenesis of ectopic mineralization is generally attributed to one of three mechanisms (Table 1). First, a supranormal “calcium-phosphate solu...
متن کاملRelation between ectopic ossification after total hip arthroplasty and activity of general inflammation in patients with ankylosing spondylitis.
Ectopic ossification (EO) is a well known complication after total hip arthroplasty (THA). Some previous studies have considered ankylosing spondylitis (AS) a risk factor of EO, however other studies have refuted this association. The reported incidence of EO varies widely in diVerent series. We retrospectively studied a total of 20 primary THAs in 16 Japanese patients with definite AS. The age...
